The 3rd AARMY2017 International Defense Exhibition (held concurrently with the Russian Military Technology Forum) took place from August 22 to 27 at the Patriot Exhibition Center in Kubinka, a suburb of Moscow. Organized by the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, the exhibition featured an outdoor area of 500,000 square meters and an indoor area of 65,000 square meters. Over a thousand domestic and international exhibitors showcased nearly 10,000 exhibits, attracting approximately 500,000 visitors from nearly 100 countries.

The exhibition consists of three main components: an exhibition, a forum, and live drills. On the first day of the exhibition, access is restricted to invited guests only—such as heads of state, defense ministers, and commanders of the three armed services. From the second to the sixth day, the exhibition is open to professional visitors, and from the fourth to the sixth day, it is also open to the general public. In addition, nearby you’ll find a shooting range, a military museum, a motorcycle museum, and the Kubinka Tank Museum.

The exhibition is divided into outdoor and indoor sections, as well as dedicated pavilions for six major defense giants. The exhibits are categorized into 41 distinct types. In addition to the usual large-scale equipment—such as naval, land, air, space, and electronic systems—that are commonly featured at international defense exhibitions, the show also includes railway unit equipment with distinctly Russian characteristics, nuclear weapons, numerous research institutes, defense electronics, and machine tools.

The outdoor exhibits feature mainly tanks, armored vehicles, special-purpose vehicles, anti-aircraft missiles, fighter jets, and armed helicopters. In terms of sheer outdoor space alone, these exhibits far exceed those of the three established defense exhibitions: DSEI in the UK, IDEX in Abu Dhabi, Middle East, and EUROSATORY in Europe. Adjacent to the indoor exhibition halls, the outdoor displays showcase an dazzling array of weapons and equipment. For instance, there’s the T-90 main battle tank, the BMP-3 infantry fighting vehicle, the “Short Range D” anti-tank missile launcher, the “Tornado” multiple rocket launcher, the “Topol-M” strategic missile, the S-300 air-defense missile system, the Typhoon-M riot-control armored vehicle, the KamAZ-63968 “Typhoon K” armored personnel carrier, armored engineering vehicles, various gun-and-missile integrated air-defense systems developed by Russia’s KBP Instrument Design Bureau, the “Pantsir-S1” air-defense system, the “Gibka-S” armored reconnaissance vehicle, the “Gibka-S” short-range air-defense missile launcher, the T-14 “Armata” main battle tank, the Boomerang 8x8 wheeled infantry fighting vehicle, the Tiger light armored vehicle, tracked infantry fighting vehicles, the Rubin armored communications vehicle, the BMD-4M airborne tank, the “Octopus” self-propelled anti-tank gun, the “Tor-M2DT” air-defense system equipped for Arctic forces, mobile radars, the Ka-52K naval attack helicopter, the Mi-28NZ attack helicopter, the “Bee” UAV and its launch vehicle, large-scale air-search radars, the Ansat light helicopter, the Iskander-M tactical missile launcher, the 9P129 “Spider” tactical missile launcher, the PST-1 pontoon bridge towing motorboat, the Tor-M1 air-defense system, the 2S7 “Pion” 203mm self-propelled howitzer, fire-rescue vehicles, fitness equipment, tents, and more.
